Ask the Building Before Booking
Contact both the old and new building early. Ask about approved moving hours, elevator reservations, loading docks, parking, required documentation, deposits, move-in fees, and whether the building requires floor or wall protection.
Reserve the Elevator
Freight elevators can be booked weeks in advance in busy buildings. Confirm the exact reservation window and whether staff must unlock or pad the elevator. Give that window to the moving company so arrival and loading plans match the building schedule.
Plan Truck Parking
A truck parked close to the entrance can save significant time. Ask where moving trucks are permitted and whether a loading permit is needed. If street parking is limited, do not assume the crew will find space when they arrive.
Measure the Route
Measure doors, hallways, stair turns, elevator dimensions, and large furniture. A sofa that fit into one apartment may not fit out through the same route after renovations or may not fit into the new building at all.
Protect Common Areas
Many properties require protection for floors, elevator walls, doors, or corners. Clarify whether the building provides materials or expects the mover to do it. Keeping common areas clean and unobstructed also reduces conflicts with neighbors and management.
Coordinate the Timeline
Work backward from the building's allowed moving window. Include time for the crew to park, check in, protect surfaces, load, travel, unload, and remove protection. A tight elevator window can make a small delay much more expensive.
Apartment Move-Out Checklist
Before turning in keys, photograph the unit, remove trash, check cabinets and closets, return building property, confirm utility responsibilities, and keep documentation showing the condition of the apartment.
