Measure Before Moving It
Measure the furniture and the exit route, including doorways, hallways, stairs, elevators, and tight turns. A piece that was assembled inside the room may need to be dismantled before it can leave.
Decide: Donate, Sell, Recycle or Dispose
Furniture in clean, usable condition may have resale or donation value, but organizations have different acceptance rules. Confirm before assuming a hauler or charity can take upholstered or damaged pieces.
Remove Loose Parts
Remove shelves, drawers, glass panels, legs, cushions, and other detachable components when appropriate. Bag hardware if the piece is being donated or reused. Do not dismantle something if doing so would make it unstable or unsafe to carry.
Protect the Property
Clear wall decor, rugs, plants, and small objects from the carrying route. Protect floors and corners where necessary. Make sure exterior gates and doors can remain safely open during removal.
Plan for Mattresses
Mattress rules and recycling options vary by location. Keep mattresses dry and tell the provider exactly what size and quantity you have. Do not assume a standard household-trash pickup will accept them.
Heavy Furniture Needs More Planning
Safes, sleeper sofas, solid-wood cabinets, large appliances, and commercial furniture can be extremely heavy. Tell the provider in advance so the crew can arrive with the right number of people and equipment.
