8 Weeks Out: Build the Plan
Create one master moving folder for estimates, receipts, inventory notes, lease or closing documents, utility confirmations, and contact information. Start with a room-by-room inventory so you know what is actually moving. Measure large furniture and the tightest doorways, stairwells, elevators, and hallways at both homes before paying to transport something that may not fit.
6–7 Weeks Out: Declutter Before You Pack
Moving fewer things is one of the simplest ways to reduce labor, packing materials, and stress. Work one room at a time and separate items into keep, donate, sell, recycle, and discard groups. Pay special attention to heavy low-value items, duplicate kitchenware, old paperwork, worn furniture, and anything you have not used in a year.
4–5 Weeks Out: Book and Confirm
Compare written estimates and make sure you understand how the mover charges: hourly, flat-rate, weight, distance, or a combination. Ask what can change the final price, whether stairs or long carries cost extra, and what protection is included. Confirm the date, arrival window, addresses, parking needs, and services in writing.
2–3 Weeks Out: Pack Strategically
Pack items you rarely use first. Label every box with the destination room and a short description, not just a number. Keep boxes reasonably light and use smaller boxes for books and dense items. Build an essentials box with chargers, medications, toiletries, basic cookware, bedding, documents, pet supplies, and a change of clothes.
The Final Week
Confirm your mover again, finish most packing, clean out the refrigerator, photograph valuable items, back up important files, and set aside anything that should travel with you rather than on the truck. If you are in an apartment, verify elevator reservations and loading rules.
Moving Day
Walk through the home before loading begins and point out fragile, high-value, or unusually heavy items. Keep pathways clear. Before the truck leaves, check closets, cabinets, attic spaces, garages, balconies, and storage areas. At delivery, direct boxes to the correct rooms so you do not have to move them twice.
The First 24 Hours in Your New Home
Prioritize safety and function before decorating. Assemble beds, locate towels and toiletries, connect essential appliances, check utilities, and inspect furniture for obvious damage. Unpack one room at a time. Save receipts and moving paperwork until you are certain all services and claims are complete.
